Objective: Idiopathic eosinophilic vasculitis has been described in previous case series as a possible manifestation of hypereosinophilic syndrome (HES) in asthma-free patients. A rare disease, it can be classified as an eosinophilic-rich, necrotizing, systemic form of vasculitis that affects vessels of various sizes in these patients. This report shares our experience with the treatment of a patient with eosinophilic vasculitis.
Case Presentation: We present the case of a 45-year-old man who suffered from idiopathic HES manifesting as digital ulcers and peripheral ischemia of both the upper and lower limbs without the involvement of other systems. Diagnosis was made after excluding the primary and secondary causes of eosinophilia. The patient responded well to both corticosteroids and mepolizumab, an interleukin-5 inhibitor, as a corticosteroid-sparing therapy.
Conclusion: Our case of HES-associated vasculitis in an asthma-free patient supports previous reports describing this rare diagnosis of idiopathic eosinophilic vasculitis in recent years. We describe a good response to mepolizumab (interleukin-5 inhibitor) in our patient.

His major approaches in these subjects are the following: 1) The body is the home of the soul, and the soul guides the body. That means the body and the soul are one unit. 2) The soul has five virtual parts. Each part is responsible for another activity in the human being. 3) Except for the treatment of diseases of the body and the soul with drugs, foods, physical exercise, etc., the Rambam believes that maintaining the health – of the body and of the soul – lies first of all, and probably exclusively, in observing the commandments and improving one’s ways, morals and conduct up to their highest levels, toward all of the world’s creatures. 4) The Rambam is of the opinion that one needs to persist in learning the Torah. One should worship God with awe and love and observe good values and virtues. All of these build the frameworks that maintain mental health and strengthen man’s abilities to develop skills for maintaining bodily health. This is so because body and soul are one – which is the basis of the Rambam’s philosophy of health and medicine.
The physician-scientist represents the medical-scientific version of the “triple threat” athlete. Yet, in medicine as in sports, specialization and business are ever more in the forefront. As the field of medicine evolves, it is likely that the role of the physician, the scientist, and the physician-scientist will continue to change. Whether this is for the good or bad will only be known in hindsight.

A great deal of biomedical research focuses on new biotechnologies such as gene editing, stem cell biology and reproductive medicine, which have created a scientific revolution. While the potential medical benefits of this research may be far-reaching, ethical issues related to non-medical applications of these technologies are demanding. We analyze, from a Jewish legal perspective, some of the ethical conundrums that society faces in pushing the outer limits in researching these new biotechnologies.
A 20-year-old female patient was admitted to hospital because of bilateral leg weakness. Laboratory investigation showed metabolic alkalosis and severe hypokalemia. Differential diagnosis included mineralocorticoid or apparent mineralocorticoid excess diseases, with a high aldosterone-to-renin ratio (ARR) after correcting hypokalemia. After confirmatory tests, imaging studies revealed a unilateral adrenocortical adenoma consistent with Conn’s disease. Surgery was curative.

The increasing medicinal use of cannabis during recent years has largely overlooked children and pregnant women due to litigious and ethical concerns. However, over the last few years medicine has observed increasing numbers of children treated with cannabis for autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD), and pregnant women treated for hyperemesis gravidarum (HG). This review provides an account of major findings discovered through this research. Specifically, cannabis may offer therapeutic advantages to behavioral symptoms of autism spectrum disorder and fetal alcohol spectrum disorder, and to the severe nausea and vomiting in hyperemesis gravidarum. The use of medical cannabis in children and pregnant women should be further discussed and researched in this patient population.
The worldwide use of the transvaginal scanning route has revolutionized obstetrical and gynecologic imaging. The long, slow, and at times challenging aspects of its acceptance by the obstetrical and gynecologic community are the subject of this article. From its inception to its recent use, the dedicated doctors in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Rambam Medical Center, Haifa, Israel, were instrumental in conceiving and then collaborating with an Israeli manufacturer in the construction and worldwide use of the transvaginal ultrasound probe, resulting in the now well-known field of transvaginal sonography.
